Ancient Order Of Hibernian’s

                                                           Division 22 Philadelphia

                                                        Fire Fighter John J. Redmond

A Brief History of Our Division

Division 22 was founded on March 6,1997 . When

Twenty six Philadelphia Firefighters decided to

expand their Irish heritage. The number 22

coincides with local 22 of the Firefighters union

and also dates back to the days of the Hibernian

Hose Companies. Engine 22 when the Philadelphia

Fire Department was made up of volunteer

companies. Engine 22 is still in service to this very day.

The Division chose to honor John Redmond, a

firefighter who had made the  supreme sacrifice

16 years ago by giving his life so others might live ,

while  fighting a fire in 1994 at the Rising Sun Baptist

Church in South Philadelphia . His  spirit lives on

  through the work we do.

Welcome

The Ancient Order of Hibernian's is a Catholic, Irish American Fraternal Organization founded in New York City in May of 1836.

The Order can trace its roots back to a parent organization, of the same name, which has existed in Ireland for over 300 years. However, while the organizations share a common thread, the North American A.O.H. is a separate and much larger organization.

Our division meets on the second Wednesday  September through June at the union hall of the Philadelphia Fire Fighters local 22 IAFF.

Brothers;

I hope all are having a fun and safe summer.

The national AOH convention in Cincinnati OH went well and I happy to report that both national boards have resolved their issue. That both boards area still in union with each other. Topics at the convention were the Unification of Ireland, Bloody Sunday report, Ballymurphy events, the President of the AOH board of Erin talked on continuing to support the AOH in America, also the AOH in Canada have been released to form their own board, and the IRS mandates. I will have more information at our September meeting  I had the pleasure to meet with First Deputy of Northern Ireland Martin McGuiness and with the Irish Ambassador to the USA Michael Collins. We had few pints and I have found both men knowledgeable on the current event in Ireland and pleasant.

The current news that the city of Philadelphia on how they are treating our fellow Hibernian's Firefighter and Paramedics and also to the whole of the Fire Department is upsetting and disturbing. We need to pray for their safety and that we need to given our strong support to the officers of the union during this crisis. There is got to be a better way.

We will be having the degrees of the Order on October 31, 2010 at the hall. If you have not made them please continue the process of learning more of the AOH. If you did come give your support to them and to other candidates. I hope you see all of you there. Further information will be posted on the web site and the newsletter.

Also name will be accepted for the Hibernian Service Awards. Date will be announced soon.

Father Robert Feeney was transfer to Sacred Heart parish in South Philly drop him a line.

I look forward to see all at our next division meeting September 8, 2010 same place and time. Be safe and continue having a fun summer with your families.  Also continue to pray for all our sick and deceased brothers and our special intentions.

The money raised from this will go to the hero thrill show which raises money for  the   college education and other expenses for the families of Philadelphia Fire Fighters & Police officers who have died in the line of duty , the money will also go to the local 22 widows fund.
